A WiiWare return of the legendary shmup series with pixel art and modern explosion effects.

Gradius ReBirth brought back one of the most significant horizontal shoot 'em up series of all time, doing so as a digital WiiWare title that combines a classic pixel-art look with modern visual lighting and explosion effects. The player once again pilots the legendary ship Vic Viper, flying through a sequence of demanding levels full of organic and mechanical enemies, with the series' iconic upgrade system remaining a key element — collecting capsules that gradually unlock speed, shields, laser, or missiles on a bar at the bottom of the screen, and the player decides for themselves which capsule to activate depending on the current situation on screen. Levels alternate between organic biomechanical environments, volcanic caverns, and mechanical fortresses, each requiring a different playstyle and different arrangement of fire on screen, from narrow cave corridors to more open space passages full of fast-moving ships.

Difficulty is high, and the demands on precise timing and level memorization are typical for the genre — Gradius was always known for punishing every mistake by stripping away all collected upgrades and sending you back to the start, and that remains unchanged here. The music continues the series' tradition of synth compositions, and together with the fast pace of the action it creates an intense, adrenaline-fueled experience typical of classic arcade shmups from the late eighties and nineties. Reviews at the time praised how faithfully it carries on the spirit of the original series while also offering an accessible entry point for players who never experienced classic Gradius titles on older consoles or arcade cabinets.

Along with Contra ReBirth, Gradius ReBirth ranks among the most highly regarded retro tributes on WiiWare, and for fans of tough, old-school shmups it remains an excellent, exciting choice to this day, one that fits into a single longer gaming evening.
