Gradius Collection
The spaceship Vic Viper returns, and with it a legend that stood at the birth of an entire genre. Gradius Collection is a small treasure for PSP owners: a single UMD disc hides several entries of one of the most influential shoot-'em-up series in history. Konami offered here a portable archive of games that once defined what a proper horizontal shmup means.
At the heart of it all is a brilliant power-up system. You collect orange capsules that advance the indicator on a bar at the bottom of the screen, and you decide for yourself when to take speed, double shot, laser, or the indestructible Options — satellites that copy your fire and change the defensive situation beyond recognition. This degree of freedom was revolutionary in the eighties and remains one of the most elegant upgrade systems in games to this day.
Gradius is also famous for its merciless difficulty and iconic bosses — recall just the Gradius brain or the Moai statues spewing rings of energy. The game demands memorization, precision, and a cool head, because a single hit strips you of all your upgrades and sends you back to the start of the section. It's old-school design that rewards patience and repetition.
On the PSP it makes sense for several reasons. The compilation lets you play in shorter bursts, save your progress, and go through the series in the comfort of your pocket. For newcomers it's an ideal gateway into the genre, for veterans a nostalgic ride through the games that influenced practically everything that came after them — from R-Type to modern bullet hell titles.
Gradius Collection is a tribute to a craft that is scarcely made anymore these days: pure, hard, and satisfying action where every advance is hard-won and every completed level a small victory. If you love shmups or want to know them from their roots, this collection belongs in your library.
Why play: An essential archive of one of the most influential shoot-'em-up series with a brilliant upgrade system, ideal for short bursts on the go.
