Gradius / Salamander
Few series shaped the form of the shooter as fundamentally as Gradius from Konami — and the duo of Gradius and its spin-off Salamander belong to the pillars of the entire genre. These are the games generations of players grew up on and from which countless later titles borrowed their ideas.
Gradius’s most famous contribution is the ingenious upgrade system (the power-up bar): defeated enemies drop capsules, and on the bar at the bottom you choose what to invest your energy in — speed, missiles, double shot, laser, or the celebrated Options, satellite orbs that mirror your fire. This freedom gave the player, for the first time, the sense of building their ship to their own style, and it became a template for countless followers.
Salamander (known in the West as Life Force) expanded the formula with two-player co-op and an alternation of horizontal and vertical stages, bringing a fresh rhythm and instant fun in playing as a pair. Instead of a gradual bar, here you receive upgrades outright, which makes the game a touch more immediate and wilder.
The cultural footprint of this series is enormous. Gradius also popularized the legendary cheat sequence, the so-called Konami Code, which became one of the most famous easter eggs in the history of games. Visually it is an iconic cosmic horizontal shmup with organic and mechanical enemies, biomechanical walls, and battles that test your patience and reflexes alike.
To play Gradius and Salamander today is to touch the very roots of the genre — to understand where the mechanics we now take for granted came from.
Why play: A cornerstone of the genre with a legendary upgrade system and co-op; an essential classic for anyone who wants to know the DNA of the shooter.
