Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series
Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is a three-part episodic VR adventure set in the Star Wars universe, in which the player, as a passenger aboard a ship, ends up on the planet Mustafar under the watch of Darth Vader and gradually uncovers a conspiracy tied to the dark side of the Force. The game combines story sequences with environmental exploration, simple puzzles, and lightsaber combat controlled by physically swinging and blocking in real time, including deflecting blaster shots back at enemies. Each episode also includes a Lightsaber Dojo minigame, where the player can practice skilled combat separately from the main story and unlock additional lightsaber hilt types with different properties and looks. James Earl Jones voicing Vader lends the whole experience striking authenticity and cinematic weight, further enhanced by the instantly familiar Star Wars music.
All three episodes were also released as standalone titles playable directly on the Meta Quest headset without a computer, allowing ILMxLAB to leverage the cinematic visual quality of the Star Wars universe while maintaining smooth performance on the mobile chip. Each episode is relatively short, an hour or so in one sitting, matching a film-like rather than game-like length, and the lightsaber combat sequences are designed to be accessible even to less experienced players. Movement through space is handled mostly via teleportation, so the risk of nausea is low, and the game is suitable even for VR beginners who are just getting familiar with a standalone headset.
The series was praised at launch for its authenticity to the Star Wars universe and for how well it uses VR to make the player feel like they're truly standing face to face with Darth Vader. It's best recommended for Star Wars fans and players looking for a shorter but visually and atmospherically strong experience, suitable even as an introduction to VR for a new headset user who wants to meet familiar characters from the film series face to face and experience their own small piece of this saga.
Why play it: For Star Wars fans and players looking for a shorter but visually and atmospherically strong experience, suitable as an introduction to VR, offering a face-to-face encounter with Darth Vader.
