Espire 1: VR Operative
Espire 1: VR Operative is a stealth action game inspired by classics like Metal Gear Solid, brought into virtual reality. The player controls a robotic operative in a battle suit, sneaking through enemy bases, hacking cameras, doors, and terminals using handheld gadgets and holographic tools, and deciding whether to proceed quietly or trigger an open firefight with genuine weapon physics and manual reloading from real belts and holsters on the body, where the player arranges weapons and grenades themselves according to their own preference.
On Quest, the version sacrifices some visual detail in favor of smoothness but retains the emphasis on carefully designed levels with multiple routes to the objective and the choice between air ducts, rooftops, or the main entrance, while guards exchange information among themselves and react to finding the bodies of fallen comrades. Sound plays a key role – footsteps, guard voices, and environmental noises must be tracked so the player isn't detected, which lends the gameplay the tension typical of the stealth genre, while being spotted triggers a hectic firefight with limited ammunition. The music is rather subliminal, giving way to an emphasis on the ambient sounds of the bases and enemy patrol chatter that reveals their current alertness state.
Upon release, the game was praised for its ambitious attempt to bring complex stealth mechanics into VR, though it struggled with technical shortcomings, longer loading times, and inconsistent enemy AI, which the developers gradually improved through subsequent updates after launch. Nevertheless, it remains one of the few titles on Quest that attempt a deeper stealth experience instead of pure action, and for genre fans it represents an interesting, if not flawless, alternative to typical VR shooters built on straightforward action without sneaking and tactical planning of approach.
Why play: For stealth genre fans craving deeper tactics than typical VR shooters offer, though technical shortcomings and inconsistent enemy AI make the game more of an interesting than a flawless alternative.
