Shadow of the Colossus
Bluepoint Games, a studio specializing in remakes and remasters, rebuilt Fumito Ueda's 2005 classic Shadow of the Colossus completely from the ground up on a modern engine while preserving every detail of the original design. A young man named Wander rides his horse Agro into a forbidden land to revive a dead girl, Mono, and the only price for this miracle is the killing of sixteen giant, majestic colossi scattered across an empty, melancholic landscape.
Instead of ordinary enemies, each colossus is a puzzle in itself - the player must find weak points, climb the giant's fur or stone body, and drive a sword into marked spots while the world shudders around them. Climbing consumes stamina and the colossus tries to shake the rider off, so the player must seek moments of calm to catch their breath; reflecting sunlight off the sword helps locate weaknesses. There are no cutscenes or side quests in the game, only long, solitary rides across the landscape that lend each encounter a ritual weight. It was precisely this combination of acrobatic climbing, the epic scale of the opponents, and a quiet, almost wordless story about the price we pay for love that made the original game one of the most influential titles in history.
The animalistic, almost mythological presence of the colossi, who often seem to defend themselves rather than attack aggressively before the player strikes, evokes in many players a sense of guilt over killing them - precisely the effect Fumito Ueda intended. The remake delivered photorealistic graphics, reworked lighting, and a smooth sixty frames per second while preserving the soul of the original, and added a photo mode and a new, even harder difficulty setting. Sound remained as essential as visuals: the colossi's thudding footsteps, the sudden silence after their fall, and the mournful orchestral theme turn every victory into something closer to a funeral than a triumph. Critics praised it as a model example of a remake, and the game reached both nostalgic veterans and an entirely new audience unfamiliar with the original PlayStation 2-era title.
