Survival horror with dinosaurs instead of zombies; prehistoric predators can smash through doors.

What if Resident Evil, but instead of zombies you were hunted by dinosaurs? It was precisely from this heady idea that Dino Crisis arose — a game in which a team of special agents lands on a remote research island and, instead of an enemy of flesh, finds predators from the distant past that can smash through doors.

The gameplay rests on survival horror foundations: exploring interconnected locations, solving puzzles, managing a limited inventory and ammunition. Compared to the competition of the time, however, Dino Crisis brought a fundamental technical leap — environments rendered in real time in 3D instead of static pre-rendered backgrounds. Thanks to this the camera followed the action more fluidly and the world felt more tangible.

The protagonist Regina faces dinosaurs that are fast, aggressive, and clever — Velociraptors can attack from ambush, and the relentless Tyrannosaurus poses a threat from which there is often no choice but to flee. Mikami himself described the game's style as suspense more in the spirit of a thriller than of classic horror: the pressure evokes adrenaline and fear of a swift attack rather than slow dread. The emphasis on collecting keys, combining items, and managing resources nevertheless remains.

Dino Crisis comes from the workshop of Capcom and was directed by Shinji Mikami, the father of Resident Evil, which is evident in the game's DNA at every step. A new brand was thus born that filled the gap between horror and action thriller and won a devoted fan base.

The game is today among the beloved PlayStation classics, and a strong community still exists that calls for its return. The fusion of proven horror mechanics with an unexpected enemy in the form of dinosaurs makes it an unmistakable piece of gaming history.

Why play it: For the unique fusion of survival horror and prehistoric predators, where every opening of a door can mean a maw full of teeth.
