Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis from 2001 brought a completely new level of military realism to PC. Instead of the arcade-style shooters common at the time, it offered a sprawling island battlefield where a fictional Cold War conflict plays out across forests, fields and villages on a scale no game had managed before. The player switches between the roles of infantryman, driver and pilot, and must reckon with realistic ballistics, limited endurance, and the fact that a single poorly aimed shot often means instant death, regardless of how many hours the player has invested in the character. The available vehicles range from simple off-road vehicles through tanks to helicopters, each requiring a different amount of patience and practice to operate.
The campaign is divided into chapters told gradually from the perspective of several soldiers on both sides of the conflict, complemented by an extensive mission editor that allowed the community to create its own scenarios and campaigns for many years afterward. The battlefield includes open plains, forests and villages, where using terrain cover and coordinating advances with a subordinate unit is essential, since a direct attack across open ground usually ends in swift defeat. The graphical rendering of the landscape was impressive for its time, though it came at the cost of high hardware demands. The sound design and dense atmosphere of the battlefield, where combat could take place at distances of hundreds of meters, created the feeling of an actual military operation rather than action entertainment.
The game from Czech studio Bohemia Interactive laid the foundation for an entire series of military simulators, and its legacy is evident in the later Arma titles and in the whole genre of realistic military games. It is still considered a pioneering title that defined what a truly open and believable virtual battlefield can look like, and many of its design principles remain in use throughout the series to this day.
