Mafia II
Mafia II built on the success of the first game in 2010 and transported players to the fictional Empire Bay, this time spanning the period from World War II to the 1950s. The main character is Vito Scaletta, a veteran who, upon returning from the front, gets involved in organized crime to pay off family debts, and together with his friend Joe gradually rises through the ranks of the local family, having to choose between loyalty to friends and his own conscience. The story again relies on linearly told missions with an emphasis on cinematic presentation, dialogue and relationships between characters, while the open city serves mainly as an atmospheric backdrop between chapters. Both Vito and Joe are portrayed as believable characters with their own weaknesses, so the player ultimately understands their decisions and mistakes without necessarily condoning them.
The gameplay combines cover-based shootouts, driving period vehicles, and occasional quieter passages devoted to building relationships and atmosphere, complemented by small period details such as paying off fines to policemen or listening to the radio with period news and advertisements. Visually, the game benefited from significantly more elaborate depictions of interiors, weather and time of day than its predecessor, and was accompanied by a licensed period soundtrack that further enhanced the illusion of postwar America. Some players and reviewers at the time criticized the reduced emphasis on side content and the openness of the world compared to what the first game offered, yet the story and atmosphere were largely received positively.
Even years later, Mafia II retains its reputation as a quality story-driven game with a strong atmosphere and ranks among the titles that showed a Czech studio could create a game with a powerful emotional impact even amid strong competition, albeit at the cost of less freedom than more open rivals offered. For many players, the ending of the story remains one of the most powerful moments of the entire series.
