Wing Commander
Wing Commander brought something to the PC in 1990 that no one had tried before: a space fighter game that didn't feel like a technical manual but like a war film. The player boards the carrier Tiger's Claw as a fresh Confederation pilot and flies out into battles against the feline Kilrathi race. Individual missions consist of navigation points, escorts, reconnaissance, and sharp dogfights, but around them is built an entire campaign structure: depending on how you perform, the campaign branches into a better or worse variant, the mood aboard ship changes, and so does who from your squadron survives to the next deployment.
Combat runs on a simple but extremely readable model. The fighters behave more like World War Two aircraft than objects in zero gravity, and that's exactly what makes the dogfights so understandable even to a player who never opened the manual. Each craft has a different combination of armor, shields, speed, and weapons, so the choice of mission and wingman carries weight. Between flights you visit the ship's bar, listen to stories, and watch anonymous names turn into characters players come to care about. Technically it was a showcase for the computers of the time: a full VGA palette, scaled bitmap graphics, digitized sound, and music that reacted continuously to what was happening in combat.
At the time the game was seen as proof that the PC had caught up with, and in many ways overtaken, the Amiga and the consoles of the era, and it launched one of the most important series of the nineties. Wing Commander's influence can be felt wherever space action meets storytelling, from later space sims to modern attempts to revive them. Today the game feels archaic in its controls and in how demanding it was on period hardware, but its pacing, music, and the sense of belonging to a squadron still work. Anyone who wants to understand why such a cult formed around space simulators should start right here.
