Wing Commander
Wing Commander launched in 1990 on DOS-based PCs from Origin Systems and became known as one of the first space combat simulators built around a strong narrative: missions unlocked based on the outcome of previous battles, so players felt their performance directly shaping the fate of the whole campaign against the hostile Kilrathi race. The series was defined by combining demanding cockpit dogfights with cinematic cutscenes, making it feel more like an interactive space opera than pure action.
The first game's success led to Wing Commander II and then to fully live-action cutscenes in Wing Commander III and IV, which combined filmed footage with actors and a more elaborate branching story shaped by the player's choices. The games also reached the 3DO console and supported the then-experimental Forte VFX1 headset for an immersive cockpit view, underlining the series' ambition to push the genre's technical boundaries. The shift to cinematic storytelling in Wing Commander III is usually regarded as the series' peak, thanks to the combination of strong mission design and an ambitious production. Wing Commander helped define the story-driven space-sim genre and influenced a whole generation of games that tried to fuse cinematic storytelling with action gameplay.
