Wing Commander: Prophecy
Wing Commander: Prophecy turned away from the cinematic approach of previous installments and brought a more action-oriented space simulator with a new engine and a new generation of pilots led by the promising fighter pilot Colt, who for the first time finds himself caught up in events that go far beyond an ordinary patrol mission. The story takes place after the end of the war with the Kilrathi and introduces new, mysterious and much more dangerous enemies referred to in the series' story as the Nephilim, giving the game a darker and more urgent tone compared to the previous installments full of politics and intrigue.
In terms of gameplay, Prophecy returned to an emphasis on action-packed space battles with fewer extensive cutscenes, while the new 3D engine allowed for more detailed ship models, smoother combat and more effective explosions on the era's Windows 9x computers. The player gradually flies several types of fighters, manages shield and weapon systems, and progresses through a campaign divided into several missions with branching paths depending on the outcome of previous battles, which gave the game a sense of consequence for the player's own decisions. The sound design and music helped build a sense of growing threat that the theme of new, insect-like enemies brought to an otherwise familiar universe.
Prophecy also received the Secret Ops expansion, which further developed the story and distributed it online, an unusual distribution model for its time. Within the series, Prophecy is valued as a return to the core of the space simulator after the expensive cinematic experiment of the fourth installment, and for many players it represents a more balanced and playable experience, even though it did not reach the same popularity and budget as earlier games in the series. The character of Colt and his gradual rise from an inexperienced rookie to a respected pilot also offered a more personal and straightforward story line than the branching political plots players were used to from earlier Wing Commander installments.
Why play it: For fans of the Wing Commander series who, after the expensive cinematic experiment of the fourth installment, will appreciate a return to the core of the space simulator and the more personal story of the young pilot Colt.
