Concludes the classic trilogy; players even get to pilot the legendary Millennium Falcon.

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance concluded the classic trilogy of Star Wars space simulators, combining an elaborate single-player campaign with the multiplayer elements of the previous title, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. The story follows the Farlander family of smugglers who gradually get drawn into the fight against the Empire, and in a single campaign the player gets to fly not only standard Republic fighters but also the legendary Millennium Falcon - a huge draw for fans and one of the most memorable moments in the whole game.

The game expanded the series' simulator core with more detailed ship models, a more elaborate mission design featuring larger battles, and more varied objectives, from escorting convoys and trade missions to massive fleet clashes with dozens of ships on screen. On Windows 9x PCs, the game offered visually impressive star battles for its time and an atmosphere built on music inspired by the film saga's style, complemented by sound effects and character voices tying into the movies. The campaign sensitively wove the story of a single family into the great events of the galactic civil war, giving the game an emotional dimension beyond purely tactical space dogfights.

X-Wing Alliance is still considered by many fans to be the peak of the classic era of Star Wars space simulators and the last major entry in the series before the genre receded into the background for a long time in favor of other types of games. The combination of a quality campaign, beloved ships, an elaborate trading system, and multiplayer support made it a title still remembered fondly more than two decades later. The freedom to fly between factions, trade, and fight within a single, more open environment also foreshadowed the later trend of simulators aiming to offer players more freedom than just a linear sequence of combat missions.

Why play it: For fans of Star Wars space simulators looking for the peak of the genre's classic era - an elaborate campaign, a trading system, and freedom to choose your faction, all in one title.
