Brány Skeldalu

RPG (dungeon crawler) 1998 Napoleon Games České a slovenské hry ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h ⭐ Must-play

A cult Czech dungeon crawler; step-by-step movement through winding corridors full of traps and monsters.

Gates of Skeldal from 1998 is one of the most significant Czech games of the nineties and still enjoys the reputation of a cult classic of domestic creation. Studio Napoleon Games created a step-based dungeon crawler in a fantasy world where the player assembles a party of adventurers and makes their way through winding underground corridors, castles, and caves full of traps, puzzles, and monsters, with progress through the map requiring patience and careful mapping of branching corridors. The game drew on the tradition of Western RPGs like Might and Magic, but carried its own distinctly Czech atmosphere, sense of detail, and specific storytelling style, which still evokes strong nostalgia among players of the time.

The gameplay was built on turn-based combat, party management, and gradual character development, while also placing considerable emphasis on solving puzzles and discovering hidden parts of the map. The text descriptions and dialogue were written with care and humor, which set the game apart from many foreign competitors who couldn't take local context into account. On Windows 9x computers the game ran even on more modest hardware, which made it accessible to a wide range of Czech players of the time, for whom it was often their first serious RPG experience on a home computer.

Contemporary responses were warm, the game gained a loyal fanbase, and became one of the pillars of the nascent Czech gaming industry alongside titles like Fish Fillets. The vocabulary, character names, and small jokes referencing Czech reality gave the game an unmistakable domestic identity that foreign RPGs of the time logically lacked. Its influence persists to this day – the game received sequels as well as modern remastered versions that allowed it to reach new generations of players too. Gates of Skeldal remains a reminder of a time when Czech developers proved they could compete with the world's best even with limited resources.
