Star Wars: Rebel Assault

Rail shooter / interaktivní film 1994 LucasArts Star Wars ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A pioneering CD-ROM title with movie sequences straight from Star Wars.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault was, in the mid-1990s, one of the titles often used to showcase what CD-ROM technology could do compared to classic cartridges. The game from LucasArts, originally released a year earlier on PC, came to the Mega-CD as a full-fledged port using rendered movie sequences and digitized sound straight from the Star Wars universe. Playing as a rookie member of the Rebel Alliance, the player gradually works their way from basic training to taking part in the real battles well known from the film trilogy.

In terms of gameplay, it's a rail shooter – the player doesn't have full control over the ship's movement but instead aims and shoots, while the camera and flight path are fixed, whether it's flying through a canyon, dogfighting TIE fighters, or the final attack on the Death Star. Between the action sequences are rendered movie cutscenes that were meant to impress viewers in 1994 with their production quality and cinematic atmosphere, though from today's perspective it's clear this was primarily a technology showcase rather than a display of gameplay depth. The controls are straightforward, but the game can be frustrating due to the need to memorize the exact moments for evasive maneuvers.

On the Mega-CD, the game benefited precisely from what this platform promised – a cinematic intro, character voices, and music straight from the film original, which simply couldn't be crammed into a regular cartridge console like that. For Star Wars fans, this was a unique opportunity to experience the film battles in interactive form, even though the depth of the action remained rather superficial.

Why play: Cinematic Star Wars battles in rail-shooter form, showing in 1994 exactly what CD-ROM was good for.
