One of the first titles to fully exploit the CD-ROM; on-rails flight through the saga's battles.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault was among the first titles to fully exploit the capacity of CD-ROM media, and it became one of the best-selling games of the early CD-ROM era. The player takes on the role of a young Rebel Alliance pilot named Rookie One, whose journey from training on Tatooine to key battles of the saga, including the attack on the Death Star and the Battle of Hoth, is told through corridor-style flight and ground sequences with limited but effective freedom of movement, supplemented by digitized film footage and classic Star Wars sound effects.

The visual style combined hand-drawn and digitized footage with music and sound effects taken directly from the Star Wars trilogy, which, at a time when most games ran in low resolution with MIDI music, felt extraordinarily impressive audiovisually and, for many players, offered a first glimpse of what the CD-ROM format could do. The gameplay, however, was rather simple and linear, closer to an interactive movie with minimal actual player control over movement, which was a common compromise at the time for games built primarily around cinematic presentation and atmosphere. The player mostly just aimed the cursor and dodged obstacles or enemy fire, while the movement of the ship or character itself followed predetermined paths, resembling a ride more than a full-fledged flight simulation.

Rebel Assault is remembered today mainly as a technological showcase of the power of the CD-ROM format and as evidence of the early fascination with multimedia content in games, rather than as a deep gaming experience with elaborate mechanics. Nevertheless, it played a significant role in popularizing CD-ROM drives on personal computers and remains an interesting historical stop in the development of Star Wars games, later followed by the sequel Rebel Assault II with improved graphics and smoother controls.
