Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (mobile)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 arrived on phones of the day as a mobile adaptation of the famous skateboarding series that defined the whole arcade skating genre on consoles. The player rides through simplified versions of iconic levels, collects points for combos of tricks, and completes timed challenges, with the basic principle of chaining tricks into combos preserved despite drastic simplification compared to the console original.
A key question for any such port was how the trick controls, dependent on console analog sticks and buttons, would translate to a mobile phone's numeric keypad, and the mobile version handled this limitation better than a skeptic might expect, button combinations allowed grinds, manuals, and jumps to be performed with decent fluidity. The graphics were necessarily sparse and the levels shortened, yet the game managed to preserve the feeling of building long combos that was the core of the whole series. The title was sold as a paid Java game through carrier stores, typically for a one-time fee, unlike later mobile sports games, which increasingly relied on ads or microtransactions.
The release showed that even more technically demanding sports genres could be brought to limited hardware if the controls were thought through with a feel for the platform. Today the game is only available through archives and emulation of period phones, you can no longer officially buy it anywhere.
Why play it: will please fans of the skateboarding series who want to see how well the combo system translated to a mobile keypad, though today it can only be launched through an emulator of an old phone.

On the PlayStation this is a game still ranked among the highest-rated titles in history (a Metacritic score around 98) thanks to its perfectly tuned combo system and fully 3D skate parks. The Game Boy Advance lacked the hardware for similar 3D rendering, so developers reworked the game into a top-down/isometric view with smaller, simplified versions of the iconic levels, but kept the core gameplay — chaining tricks and the scoring system — intact, earning the handheld version praise for capturing the spirit of the original despite its completely different look.
