Splinter Cell (mobile)
Splinter Cell brought to phones the stealth action based on Tom Clancy's book and game franchise, in which agent Sam Fisher infiltrates guarded facilities and tries to stay unseen rather than shoot his way out. The mobile version from Gameloft preserved the basic idea of sneaking, the player hides in shadows, tracks the movement of guards, and looks for the moment to slip past or quietly neutralize an enemy, while misjudging a guard's patrol route usually meant restarting the mission from the last checkpoint.
Transplanting stealth mechanics dependent on light, shadow, and carefully watching enemies onto a small monochrome or early color display was no trivial task, yet Gameloft managed to preserve the basic thrust of the game, namely the tension of sneaking instead of automatic action. Directional and action controls were handled by the keypad of phones of the day, though naturally with less precision than a console controller, so the game relied more on patience and planning than on quick reactions. The game was among the paid Java titles sold through carrier stores, a typical distribution model for higher-quality mobile adaptations of this era.
Splinter Cell on mobile shows that even genres dependent on atmosphere and patience found their way to phones of the time, albeit in a simplified form. Today you can't buy the game, mobile Java stores disappeared along with the phones they targeted.
Why play it: appreciated by fans of the stealth genre and the Splinter Cell series who want to see how sneaking adapted to a small display, though today they'll only realistically play it through emulation of an old phone.
