Asphalt Urban GT

Závodní 2004 Gameloft Asphalt ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

The first installment of the Asphalt racing series; the foundation of one of Gameloft's most successful franchises.

Asphalt Urban GT launched one of the most successful racing series of the mobile era and laid the foundation for the Asphalt franchise, which Gameloft still develops today. The player races through city tracks in sports cars, overtakes opponents, collects speed boosts, and tries to finish first, with the arcade approach emphasizing fun and flashy driving over simulation realism.

On phones of the time it was a visually ambitious title, the 3D graphics of the cars and tracks tried, within the limits of the Java platform, to approach the impression of console racing arcade games, and even though the details were necessarily simplified, the feeling of speed and fighting for position worked surprisingly well. Keypad controls handled steering, gas, and brakes, the standard approach for mobile racing games of the time. The game was sold as a paid title through carrier stores, unlike later installments of the series, which gradually shifted to a free-to-play model with microtransactions and ads inserted directly into the racing.

The success of the first Asphalt showed that Gameloft had found a recipe it could develop across many sequels spanning generations of phones and consoles, without having to fundamentally change the series' basic arcade core. This particular first installment is today only available through period phones or emulation, but the series lives on in modern versions in current app stores.

Why play it: interesting for racing game fans and Gameloft history buffs who want to see the exact origin of the Asphalt brand, though today they'll only play it in an archive or emulation of an old phone.
