Diamond Rush
Diamond Rush is one of Gameloft's original mobile titles - not a licensed port, but a game designed from the ground up for Java and Symbian, which is reflected in its 2008 design as well. The player explores a cave labyrinth, collects diamonds, and dodges falling boulders, barrels, or other traps that trigger almost immediately after the player sets them off - the game rests on quick decisions and escape rather than the slow planning of classic puzzle games.
The levels were assembled from simple but quickly readable pieces, where the player pushed boulders, opened paths and grabbed treasure before a trap could catch up, all controlled with the numeric keypad without needing precise multi-button input. New trap mechanisms and environments kept getting added, so despite its simple foundation, the game offered a decent amount of content for how much space it took up in the memory of phones at the time. Visually, it relied on bright colors for the cave tunnels that stood out well against the dark background, and individual traps were designed to be recognizable as dangerous at first glance.
Diamond Rush was sold through carrier portals as a paid download and was among the more successful original Gameloft titles of that era, which later earned it a sequel and expansion into further language versions. Today, though, along with the demise of J2ME stores, it's effectively unavailable and can only be tracked down through archives.
Why play it: For players looking for an example of how Gameloft could design an engaging original game directly for a feature phone, not just simplify a big brand.
