Snake II built on the phenomenal success of the first installment and brought an improved version of the classic formula of a snake collecting points on the screen. Compared to the original, it offered color graphics on models that could display them, new playing fields with obstacles and bonuses, and slightly refined controls that used the navigation joystick of newer phones instead of just the numeric keypad, so the snake moved a bit more smoothly than in the first installment.
The game retained the complete accessibility of its predecessor — the goal remained to steer the snake so it wouldn't hit a wall or its own body, while it gradually grew with each bite eaten and the game naturally sped up as the snake got longer. New elements like teleports or special playing fields, however, added variety that the monochrome original lacked, allowing the game to keep the interest of players who already knew the first Snake by heart and were looking for a reason to return to the same principle again. Like the previous title, this game too was part of the phone's standard equipment, so there was no need to buy or download it anywhere.
Snake II became one of the proofs that Nokia could meaningfully develop its own successful brands without losing what made the original popular. Today the sequel is tied to period phones just like its predecessor; once the old models were discontinued, the only way to reach it is through emulation.
Why play it: it's ideal for players who know the first Snake and want to see how Nokia expanded its hit with colors and new fields without touching the core of the game.
