Doom RPG

RPG 2005 Fountainhead Entertainment Doom ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h ⭐ Must-play🔞 18+

A turn-based dungeon crawler in the Doom universe; a surprisingly well-made rebirth of the action classic on mobile.

Doom RPG transplanted an established action franchise into a completely different genre, from a first-person view down corridors full of demons it became a turn-based dungeon crawler adapted to the limited capabilities of phones at the time. The player makes their way through a maze of a base on Mars and the moon Phobos, battles with monsters happen turn by turn, and in between you can collect weapons, ammunition, and upgrades, similar to classic first-person RPGs, which set the game apart from the original fast-paced action that fans of the franchise were used to from computers.

The shift from action to a turn-based system wasn't a compromise but a clever solution to technical limitations, phones back then couldn't handle smooth real-time action with the same comfort as computers, but the turn-based model allowed the tension and atmosphere of Doom to be preserved even on a small display with limited keypad controls. The game could be downloaded through carrier app stores of the time for a fee, as was common for higher-quality Java games of this era, rather than free like Nokia's preinstalled titles.

Doom RPG is still mentioned today as one of the more successful attempts to bring a major game franchise to an early mobile phone without the result feeling like a lazy spin-off, but rather like a thoughtful adaptation of the concept to a new medium. Today you can no longer buy the game in period app stores, J2ME marketplaces disappeared along with the decline of the phones the game ran on.

Why play it: worth the attention of Doom fans and mobile history enthusiasts who want to see an original genre transformation of the franchise, though today it's reachable only through archives and emulation of old phones.
