Sonic and friends on anti-gravity boards; pace is governed by energy replenished through tricks and drifting.

Sonic Riders put Sonic's crew on futuristic anti-gravity boards and turned them into stars of their own racing series. Instead of running, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and the rest tear through tracks on boards, bikes, and rocket wheels, with race pace governed by an air and energy system that gets replenished by drifting, jumping over ramps, and performing aerial tricks. Without properly managing their energy, the player gradually slows down, which turns simply hitting the gas into a more thoughtful discipline requiring a feel for the track and your own equipment.

Sonic Team built the gameplay around three types of equipment — boards, bikes, and skates — each with different properties for speed, acceleration, and handling in turns. The tracks are full of shortcuts, ramps, and alternate paths, which makes every race a matter not just of speed but also of knowing the environment and being able to improvise on the fly. The story mode also adds a light plot framework centered on the mysterious Babylon Rogues organization and their clash with Sonic's crew over a precious treasure hidden somewhere in the sky.

Visually, the game draws on the series' colorful style and fast pace, though on the GameCube and other consoles it struggled with uneven controls that took time to master, especially when switching between the different types of equipment. Even so, it became a popular variation on classic racing games and kicked off a series of sequels that continued on later console generations with additional characters from Sonic's universe.

Why play it: For fast anti-gravity races and the distinctive visual style of Sonic's world.
