A shift from action to turn-based card strategy; an unexpected detour for PSO fans.

Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution is a standalone sequel to the popular online JRPG series, but one that completely changes the way combat works - instead of the real-time action system of previous episodes, it offers turn-based strategy built on collecting and building card decks. The story continues on from the characters and world of Episode I & II, this time in stylized graphics reminiscent of a comic book, and tells of a conflict between the space station Pioneer 2 and a mysterious organization threatening peace on the planet Ragol, while the familiar hunting expeditions into the ruins and forests of Ragol also make a return.

The player builds a deck of cards representing characters, weapons, spells, and actions, and in battles on a grid-based field plays out turns similarly to board strategy games - unit positioning, attack range, and the timing of special cards decide the outcome of an engagement far more than reflexes do. The game offered both an extensive single-player story campaign and online multiplayer, in which players could pit their own built decks against each other, bringing the series an entirely new, deeper, layered strategy system and opening up room for collecting rare cards.

Visually, it combines the proven sci-fi aesthetic of Phantasy Star Online with card artwork in a bold style, accompanied by atmospheric music continuing the sound of the previous entries. At the time of release, the title divided fans of the series who had expected a continuation of the action JRPG formula, but it was appreciated by players fond of card strategies and building their own tactics. Today Episode III is an interesting detour that shows just how far the Phantasy Star Online brand was willing to experiment with its gameplay core, and it remains one of the few genuinely strategic titles in the GameCube catalog. Although it's a detour from the series' main action line, it is still valued today by card-strategy fans for its well-thought-out balance between the various card types and the need to carefully plan each round.

Why play it: For fans of card strategies and players curious just how far the Phantasy Star Online brand was willing to experiment with its core, this is one of the few genuinely strategic titles in the GameCube catalog.
