Magical Tetris Challenge
Magical Tetris Challenge was released in 1998 simultaneously on the Game Boy Color, where Capcom had to adapt the entire Disney spectacle to a small pocket display and much more modest hardware than the home consoles of the time offered. The basic rules stayed the same - falling pieces, cooperating with Mickey Mouse and his friends, playing against the computer or against a second player via a link cable connecting two handheld consoles.
The difference is noticeable in the presentation, though: the environments of the individual themed worlds are simplified into flat sprites instead of the 3D backgrounds from the console version, the interludes are shorter and less animated, and the overall pace of the game is adapted to the smaller resolution of the pocket screen, on which the detailed graphics of the home version would blur into an illegible mess. At the same time, the Game Boy Color version benefited from being a game that could be played anywhere and in short bursts, which suits the puzzle genre perhaps even more than sitting in front of a television. For Game Boy Color owners, this was a pocket-sized variant of the same concept, adjusted to work on a screen that was significantly smaller and less colorful. The link-cable multiplayer also made sense exactly where the big home consoles didn't naturally offer it at the time - at school, on the road, or at a friend's house, without having to lug a television along. The pocket version thus targeted a different way of playing than its sibling release on the PlayStation: shorter play sessions, portability, and competing face-to-face with a friend, instead of a long sit-down in front of one screen at home. The reduced resolution also forced a rework of the legibility of the individual tetrominoes and game icons so they remained recognizable even on a small, low-color display, which is especially apparent when comparing the two versions side by side.
Why play it: The Game Boy Color version is for players who want the same fairy-tale Tetris with Mickey Mouse, but in a pocket form suited for travel and short play sessions, rather than for long sit-downs in front of the television.
