Tetris Effect

Puzzle 2018 Monstars / Resonair (Enhance) Tetris ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h 🧩 Puzzle⭐ Must-play

Classic Tetris in a hypnotic audiovisual show that surrounds the player from all sides in VR.

Tetris Effect combines the classic gameplay of arranging falling blocks with a hypnotic audiovisual show that reacts to the player's every move. The basic rules of Tetris remain unchanged, but around them arises a world of colorful visuals, music, and sound effects that synchronize with the rotation and placement of pieces so closely that the game ends up feeling more like an audiovisual experience than a purely logical puzzle game. In the PSVR version, spatial perception amplifies this effect further – the player is surrounded by cosmic scenery, underwater worlds, or desert landscapes unfolding in every direction around the playing field. Every cleared line and every falling piece triggers its own sound and light effect, so the player is gradually building not just towers of blocks but the musical piece itself that accompanies a given level.

The creative team behind the game is led by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, known for music-driven action titles like Rez, which is evident in how strongly mechanics are tied here to rhythm and color. The game offers several modes, from classic survival to timed challenges to meditative modes focused on relaxation. It's precisely in VR that this meditative aspect shows through most strongly, since the feeling of immersion in the space around the playing field can induce an almost trance-like state of concentration, in which the player stops focusing on score and lets themselves be carried by the combination of music and colorful scenery.

Tetris Effect was received at release as one of the most original ways to revive a decades-old concept, and the VR mode was frequently mentioned as the best way to experience the game, since spatial immersion in music and light gave even the famously familiar seven pieces an entirely new meaning. The title proved that even an extremely simple game mechanic can gain a completely new dimension in virtual reality if supported by thoughtful audiovisual design. It's still considered one of the most pleasant and most relaxing puzzle experiences on PSVR.

Proč hrát: For the most relaxing and audiovisually richest way to experience a notoriously familiar puzzle mechanic, the VR mode is, according to many players, the best variant of Tetris Effect.
