The New Tetris
The New Tetris was developed by Nintendo Software Technology for the Nintendo 64 and expanded the classic puzzle formula with a new mechanic called Tetris Together, thanks to which players can combine four blocks of the same color into a perfect square, earning bonus points and special effects that affect the opponent's playing field. The basic rules remain faithful to traditional Tetris – falling pieces must be stacked into continuous rows, which disappear once filled – but the new square mechanic adds another strategic layer beyond simply clearing lines and rewards a more patient, thoughtful style of play.
The game fully takes advantage of the Nintendo 64's ability to support up to four players simultaneously thanks to its four controller ports, making The New Tetris one of the few truly party-oriented Tetris titles of its generation – players could compete side by side on a split screen or cooperate on building squares in a shared mode. The graphics remain understated and clear, with an emphasis on the readability of falling pieces, while the musical accompaniment gives the game a fresh, energetic pace matching the game's own tempo and works well even during long multiplayer sessions.
The New Tetris is still valued today primarily as one of the technically most interesting Tetris titles of the nineties, thanks to its combination of traditional rules with the original square mechanic and full support for four players at once. For Nintendo 64 owners, it represented a welcome alternative to the console's action-focused library, and it is still remembered today as an excellent choice for playing together, appreciated by both casual players and longtime fans of classic Tetris. The combination of simple rules and an accessible multiplayer mode made it an ideal title for family evenings spent around a single console.
