Endurance racing inspired by the legendary Le Mans - a more deliberate pace than arcade racers.

Le Mans 24 Hours is a racing game for the Game Boy Color inspired by the legendary endurance race in the French town of Le Mans. Instead of the short sprints typical of arcade racing titles, the game offers the theme of long endurance runs with prototypes and sports cars, even though the actual play sessions are naturally shortened on the handheld compared to the reality of the twenty-four-hour race. The player chooses a car, sets a strategy, and tries to maintain the best possible pace throughout the race without risking damage to the car by driving too close to its limits. The game's more thoughtful pace stands in contrast to the fast arcade races that otherwise filled the GBC library.

On the GBC display, the track is shown from behind the car or from above, depending on the specific game mode, with a color palette distinguishing individual cars and the surroundings of the track, from the French countryside to night sections lit only by headlights. The sound design focuses on engine effects and simple melodies accompanying the menus and result screens. The game tries to convey at least part of the atmosphere of the famous race - the alternation of day and night, the risk of breakdowns, and the need to manage the car during the long drive, which sets it apart from purely arcade competitors on the same platform. It is precisely this emphasis on managing the car's strength that gives the game a different rhythm compared to the typical arcade races in the GBC library.

The Le Mans license was used in a number of racing games on various platforms in the nineties, and the GBC version is one of the attempts to bring this atmosphere to portable hardware as well. In the GBC library, it was one of the few titles focused on endurance racing rather than immediate arcade action, which gives it a distinctive place among the platform's other racing games and appeals to players looking for something other than a fast arcade lap on the handheld.
