WWF Attitude
WWF Attitude brings the popularity of late-1990s professional wrestling to the Game Boy Color, at a time when the WWF federation was experiencing the so-called Attitude Era with iconic characters such as The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. The game offers a combat system adapted to the handheld's limited controls - the player performs basic strikes, grapples, and signature moves for individual wrestlers, with the goal of weakening the opponent enough to pin them or force a submission. A range of recognizable characters from the era's roster is available, which for fans of the television broadcasts meant the chance to pit their favorite stars against each other directly on a pocket-sized screen, anytime and anywhere they felt like it.
Due to the small display, the wrestling ring is shown in simplified form, and the wrestlers' characters are distinguishable by color and basic shapes, although detailed resemblance to the real wrestlers is limited. The game contains several game modes, including a classic one-on-one match as well as a tournament structure in which the player gradually faces other names from the federation's roster while trying to fight their way to the title. The sound design is sparse, with hit effects and short fanfares after a victory, while the music is limited to short themes in the main menu.
WWF Attitude on the GBC fits into the wave of wrestling licenses that flooded the video game market across platforms at the time, from major consoles all the way down to handhelds. For wrestling fans who wanted to have their favorite entertainment on hand even away from home, it was one of the few options on the GBC. Today, the game is interesting mainly as a period memento of an era when wrestling was at the height of its popularity and its stars appeared on game covers across all the platforms of the time, from major home consoles to the pocket-sized Game Boy Color.
