V-Rally: Championship Edition
V-Rally: Championship Edition brings to the Game Boy Color the rally series that became famous on home consoles for its elaborate physics and wide selection of tracks and cars. The handheld version necessarily simplifies this concept - the player drives on closed rally stages with varying surfaces, from asphalt through gravel to snow, and tries to achieve the best possible time while keeping the car on the track even through demanding corners. The individual stages link together into a small championship in which results are added up across multiple tracks.
The graphics use a view from behind the car or from above depending on the selected mode, and the GBC's color palette clearly distinguishes the different surface types and the surroundings of the track, so the player can immediately tell when they move from asphalt onto slippery gravel. The controls focus on acceleration, braking, and steering, complemented by gearbox handling, which gives the game a somewhat higher demand on skill than purely arcade racing titles on the same console. It is precisely this emphasis on more technical driving that sets it apart from the more entertaining but shallower racing games in the GBC library. The sound design is typically sparse, with engine effects and short remarks from the co-driver, who guides the player through the stage and warns of upcoming corners.
The V-Rally series was among the respected rally brands of the nineties, and the port to the GBC was meant to let fans take a piece of that entertainment with them even away from a home console or computer. In the handheld's library, it was one of the few titles specifically dedicated to rally racing, which even today gives it a solid place among players interested in retro handhelds, especially those who know the series' main installments on larger platforms and want to recall what rally racing looked like on pocket-sized hardware at the turn of the millennium.
