Konami's football rival to FIFA, adapted to the handheld's buttons and screen.

International Superstar Soccer 2000 is a Konami football game for the Game Boy Color, continuing the popular ISS series that competed with the FIFA brand on home consoles. The player manages a national or club team, plays league and cup matches, and uses a gameplay system built around passing, dribbling, and shooting adapted to the handheld's buttons. Compared to the console entries, the pace of matches is tailored to the smaller screen and simpler controls, while the basic gameplay framework remains recognizably the same as in the series' bigger console siblings.

The pitch is shown from a top-down view, and players are rendered as small but distinguishable sprites in each team's jersey colors. The sound is typical for GBC sports titles of the time - short effects for a kick, the referee's whistle, and a simple menu melody, accompanied now and then by crowd cheers from the stands. The game also offers tournament and league modes that provide room for longer play than a single one-off match, letting the player gradually build up their favorite team's form across a season. Despite the technical limitations, the portable version keeps the emphasis on combination play and precise passing that were typical of the series' console entries.

The International Superstar Soccer series was well regarded in the nineties for its polished gameplay on home consoles, and the port to the GBC was meant to let fans play their favorite brand on the go as well. Within the GBC library, it was one of the alternatives to EA Sports' FIFA, aimed at players who preferred Konami's take on football, with its emphasis on precise ball control. Today it's interesting as a point of comparison between two rival football series on the same platform, and proof that even on a small screen they managed to keep the distinct character that fans of both brands knew well from the big consoles.
