Planetfall – In-game
In-game

A sci-fi text adventure famous for Floyd, a cute and unpredictable robot companion.

Planetfall is a sci-fi text adventure in which the player, a bored crew member of a spaceship, is shipwrecked on a seemingly abandoned planet and gradually uncovers the fate of a long-vanished civilization. The game combines exploration of a sprawling complex of buildings and underground tunnels with puzzles based on operating machinery, access cards, and various devices whose purpose must first be figured out. The key character is a robot named Floyd, a cute and playful companion the player meets shortly after the crash, who becomes their only partner for most of the game. Floyd not only helps the player with puzzles but also behaves unpredictably and playfully, sometimes hiding, playing with found items, or needing to be calmed down, giving him an unusually lively personality by the standards of the time.

On the Atari 8-bit, Planetfall, like other Infocom games, runs purely on a text parser without graphics, with reliable handling of complex commands and an extensive vocabulary. The atmosphere is built mainly through the written descriptions of empty corridors and abandoned rooms, with silence underscoring a sense of loneliness until Floyd joins the player with his childlike playfulness and endless curiosity. It is precisely this contrast between the castaway's melancholic solitude and the robot's naive energy that gave the game its unmistakable tone, setting it apart from most text adventures of the time, which relied mainly on puzzles.

The game is remembered to this day mainly for one scene involving Floyd, which ranks among the most emotional moments of the early era of computer games and surprised many players used to text adventures being primarily about puzzles, not feelings. Planetfall thus remains an example of how even a purely text-based medium without a single image could tell a story with an emotional impact that exceeded the technical capabilities of the home computers of the time, the Atari 8-bit included.

Why play it: Anyone who doubts that a purely text-based game can be emotionally moving will find in Planetfall, and its scene with Floyd, proof that a story can have real impact even without a single image.
