Germany 1985

Strategie 1983 Strategic Simulations, Inc. ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

An operational wargame about a hypothetical clash between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in West Germany.

Germany 1985 simulates a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces on the territory of West Germany in the mid-1980s. The game belongs to the line of operational wargames in which the player commands divisions and regiments on a map divided into areas or hexagons, planning advances, supply, and the massing of forces in order to hold the front or break through the enemy's defenses. Emphasis is placed on logistics and the timing of attacks, a typical trait of SSI's more modern war simulations of the time, and the player must constantly balance the strength of an assault against the risk of overextending their own supply lines.

On the Atari 8-bit, the game works with a map made up of colored unit symbols and terrain features, through which the player navigates using keyboard commands and numbered menus. The presentation remains functional rather than flashy, but the clarity of unit placement and battle status mattered more to players than graphical detail. The audio side is minimalist, focused on short action confirmations, which was typical for the operational wargame genre and left all the room for concentrating on tactical decisions on the map.

Germany 1985 was part of a series of modern conflict scenarios with which SSI courted players longing for a more realistic view of contemporary warfare than the historical World War II titles offered. In its time, this was a game for an audience willing to invest time in studying the rules and planning several moves ahead, setting it apart from more action-oriented titles on the same war theme. The atmosphere is further shaped by the very awareness that this was a scenario that was frighteningly current at the time of release, so the player feels, over the map of the front, the weight of decisions carrying real historical undertones. Today it is interesting as a period view of Cold War anxieties translated into game form, and as evidence of the depth eight-bit wargames were capable of reaching even without the graphical spectacle of later computer simulations.

Why play it: Anyone willing to invest time in studying the rules and planning several moves ahead will appreciate Germany 1985's period perspective on Cold War anxieties with real historical undertones.
