Geopolitique 1990
Geopolitique 1990 puts the player in the seat of a state leader who, in the tense atmosphere of a near future, must steer their country through a period of economic, military, and diplomatic turbulence up to the year 1990. Instead of battles, the game focuses on managing the economy, dividing the budget between the military, industry, and social areas, and reacting to random international events that can bring the country either prosperity or crisis. Other states are controlled by artificial intelligence, and their behavior forces the player to constantly reassess their own policy, as the balance of power shifts continuously over the course of a match.
On the Atari 8-bit, the game takes the form of text-oriented screens with overviews of statistics, reports, and decisions that the player goes through round by round. The graphical side is deliberately spare, because the emphasis is on the number of variables to track and the impact of individual decisions on the country's long-term development. This approach was unusual for eight-bit machines in how little it relied on action elements and how heavily it bet on systemic modeling of the economy and international relations, including the effects of trade agreements and military pacts on regional stability.
Geopolitique 1990 appealed to a narrower circle of players interested in politics and economics rather than a mass audience, but within SSI's catalog it represented a bold experiment in simulating governance. Its emphasis on macroeconomic decisions and the unpredictable consequences of policy foreshadowed later, better-known geopolitical simulations that developed this concept with more elaborate presentation. Here the player had to accept that even a seemingly sensible decision could trigger an unexpected crisis a few rounds later, giving matches a whiff of the unpredictability of real politics. Today it is interesting mainly as evidence of how diversely the concept of strategy could be understood on eight-bit computers, far beyond the boundaries of traditional battlefields and hexagonal maps.
Why play it: For players interested in politics and economics, Geopolitique 1990 offers a bold simulation of governance, where even a seemingly sensible decision can trigger an unexpected crisis.
