Rails West!

Strategie / Budovatelská hra 1985 Strategic Simulations, Inc. ⏱ Long · ~10–30 h

Building railroads across the American West; economics and a fight over key routes.

Rails West! takes players into the era of railroad building across the nineteenth-century American West, competing against rival companies to lay track, found stations, and connect cities with profitable routes. The player manages finances, buys equipment, decides the direction of the network's expansion, and must account for terrain as well as competing lines that can block the way to lucrative destinations. The turn-based structure combines economic planning with territorial rivalry over who first connects the key regions of the continent, and a poorly chosen expansion direction can set a company back for several rounds.

On the Atari 8-bit, the map of the continent is shown as a colorful network of cities and connections along which the player gradually extends their own routes, while text summaries report on the state of the treasury, material prices, and the results of each round. The graphics serve mainly for orientation on the map, while the main weight of the game lies in economic decision-making and the timing of expansion. The sound design stays within the bounds of the era's strategy titles, that is, very sparse, leaving all the room for focused planning of routes and budget.

Rails West! was among the SSI titles that showed strategy on eight-bit computers didn't have to be only about battles, but also about building infrastructure and economic competition. In its time it appealed to players interested in economic simulations and became one of the early examples of the railroad-building genre, later made far more famous by considerably better-known titles on more powerful platforms. Rivalry over key routes between players also gave matches dynamism, since timely seizure of a strategic corridor could decide the further direction of the entire game. Today it is interesting above all as a historical milestone showing the roots of building-style economic strategies on home computers of the eighties.

Why play it: Anyone looking for a strategy built on construction and economic competition rather than battles will appreciate Rails West! as an early and still interesting example of the railroad-building genre.
