Steel Diver
Steel Diver was among the Nintendo 3DS launch titles and offered an unusual concept — controlling a submarine from a side view, where the player must manage depth, tilt, and torpedo aiming all at once. The game splits its content across three submarines with different speed, armament, and maneuverability characteristics, and the campaign guides the player through a series of missions focused on sinking enemy ships, destroying coastal targets, and navigating narrow underwater tunnels full of mines and patrols. Between missions, the player gradually unlocks access to more powerful submarines that offer a different balance between speed, armor, and firepower, so the choice of vessel also affects the approach to individual missions.
The controls are deliberately slow and cumbersome, meant to simulate the inertia of a real submarine, and the game thus emphasizes patience and precise planning over reflexes — a sudden maneuver or a hasty torpedo shot easily backfires. It also makes use of the 3DS's stereoscopic 3D display to accentuate the depth of the underwater environment, which at the time of release was one of the showcase examples of how the 3D effect could be used meaningfully in game design. Visually, it is a restrained, technically undemanding game, accompanied by quiet, atmospheric music that reinforces the claustrophobic feeling of sailing beneath the surface.
As a launch title, Steel Diver was more of a showcase for the console than a sprawling adventure — the campaign is short, and the game doesn't take itself too seriously, with a tongue-in-cheek nod to old submarine war films. Still, it became one of the titles players remember precisely for its unusual combination of slow, deliberate action with a technological showcase of the 3D display, something the launch lineup of the 3DS didn't offer too often at the time. Today it feels more like a curious side product of its era, but as a restrained, atmospheric piece it retains a distinctive charm that will appeal to players looking for a change of pace from faster action titles.
