Twin-stick shmup by Shin'en Multimedia; spherical arenas inside giant organisms.

Nano Assault EX is a twin-stick shmup from the German studio Shin'en Multimedia, renowned for its ability to squeeze the maximum out of Nintendo hardware. The player controls a small bio-mechanical ship traveling across and inside giant organic structures resembling cells and viruses, with one stick controlling movement and the other aiming fire — the classic twin-stick shooter scheme transplanted into a microscopic, organic environment. Levels are arranged as spherical arenas, with the player moving across the surface of a sphere while facing waves of enemies and massive bosses, the curved surface also changing where and how enemies attack from.

The game stands out with extremely smooth visuals and effects that, for the standards of the time, exceeded expectations on 3DS — Shin'en has long been known for squeezing surprisingly detailed visuals out of Nintendo hardware while maintaining stable framerates. The electronic soundtrack, typical of the studio's work, heightens the sense of fast, pulsing action, while stereoscopic 3D lends battles on the spherical surfaces a distinctive sense of space. Gameplay is built around collecting samples and upgrading the ship between levels, which motivates the player to repeatedly work through shorter missions and chase better results on the spherical arenas.

Thanks to its technical polish and precise, satisfying controls, Nano Assault EX earned a reputation among shoot 'em up fans as one of the best examples of the style on 3DS. As a purely digital eShop title, it never achieved mass popularity, but among players looking for a quality arcade shooter it was often recommended. It's still valued today as an example of how a smaller independent studio managed to work around the handheld's limitations and create a title that stands above average in both visuals and gameplay.
