Azure Striker Gunvolt
Azure Striker Gunvolt is an action platformer with a strong emphasis on shooting, created by studio Inti Creates as a spiritual successor to its own Mega Man Zero series. The player controls Gunvolt, a young man with electric powers who, instead of classic shooting and dodging between enemies, uses a special tagging mechanic — firing a weak beam at an enemy and then finishing them off with a powerful electric discharge, which requires the player to keep constantly moving and plan a path between tagged targets. This system allows multiple enemies to be hit at once and sets the game apart from classic run-and-gun titles where it's enough to aim and press the fire button.
The level design combines fast platforming sections with intense boss fights, which are among the game's most distinctive elements thanks to striking designs and demanding but fair attack patterns that must first be recognized and only then effectively countered. The visual style draws on anime aesthetics and is accompanied by energetic electronic and rock music that underscores the fast pace of the gameplay. The game also includes side story elements and visual novel segments between missions that develop the characters and the world and explain the political background of the conflict Gunvolt gets pulled into.
Azure Striker Gunvolt was well received on release by fans of action platformers and quickly became one of the most acclaimed eShop titles on 3DS, drawing comparisons precisely to the classic Mega Man Zero games. Its success led to several sequels and cemented Inti Creates' position as a studio capable of carrying forward the legacy of demanding yet precisely tuned action games. To this day it is considered one of the must-play titles for action genre fans on Nintendo 3DS, often credited with reviving interest in fast, precisely tuned action platformers on handhelds.
