Way of the Warrior
Way of the Warrior is a fighting game best remembered for who was behind it: a small duo of developers created it for the 3DO, and the experience launched one of the most successful development careers in console history. The game is built on digitized characters captured from real people in costumes, so the fighters look like they were cut straight out of a B-movie action flick. Fights follow the classic one-on-one, best-of-three-rounds format; each fighter has their own special moves, and the game doesn't hold back on brutal finishing moves, including hazards built right into the arenas that can be used to slam an opponent into. The roster is deliberately over-the-top, and each character has a distinct look and fighting style, from giant brutes to fast swordsmen.
Technically, it was a showcase of what a small team could achieve with a disc-based format: large digitized sprites, captured backgrounds, and above all a soundtrack made up of licensed metal music that gave the game its energy and was often cited as one of its biggest strengths. The presentation felt flashy, with booming announcer calls and punchy hit sound effects, and the arenas were chosen to grab attention at first glance — a temple courtyard, a cave, or a place surrounded by a chasm. However, the combat balance fell short of the arcade fighters it was inspired by, and the controls were stiffer and less precise than genre fans were used to.
Contemporary reviews were split — some critics praised its boldness, style, and music, while others pointed out that it was more of a flashy imitation than a truly well-tuned fighter. Ultimately, though, the game's significance lies elsewhere: the earnings and experience it brought its creators let them move on to projects that fundamentally shaped the next console generation. Today, Way of the Warrior plays as a curiosity with a very strong period atmosphere, worth experiencing more for its style, music, and audacity than for the depth of its fighting system.
