Strategy
549 games in the catalog
Strategy is the genre where the player who plans better wins, not the one who clicks faster. You run an army, a city, an empire or just a handful of units on a map, and every decision pays off or backfires several turns later. The roots lie in board wargames and chess, which hobbyists began moving onto mainframes and the first home computers in the 1970s.
The genre soon split into two branches: turn-based games, where you can think as long as you like, and real-time games, where the clock presses on every move. From these grew a long list of subgenres, from empire building and small-squad tactics to running hospitals and theme parks.
It lasted because it offers something other genres give only in passing: the feeling of having understood a system and read it better than your opponent. The mouse and the map belong to the PC, but turn-based tactics also thrived on consoles and handhelds, and now run on phones.
Today (2015 onwards)
109 games in the catalogToday strategy lives in two forms. Big series such as Total War, Anno and Civilization grow through long runs of expansions and deep simulation: Crusader Kings III (2020) from Paradox builds on dynasties and inheritance instead of armies, while Frostpunk (2018) from Poland puts you in a city where survival depends on moral choices. The second form is remasters and definitive editions that return older games to modern displays, plus ports to Switch and phones with touch controls. Turn-based tactics also returns inside RPGs such as Persona 5 Tactica.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) revived turn-based tactics after years when it looked outdated, and Kickstarter helped small teams like the one behind FTL. On phones, strategies built around short sessions appeared.

The arrival of 3D (1995–2004)
152 games in the catalogAfter Dune II, real-time strategy spread across the PC, and StarCraft (1998) added three sides that played completely differently yet stayed balanced. Graphics cards then let the camera turn: Homeworld (1999) set an entire game in 3D space, and big map strategies began pairing a turn-based campaign with three-dimensional battles. Alongside the PC, a console stream grew, mostly from Japan: turn-based tactics on a grid with characters who gain experience. Operation Flashpoint (2001), from Prague's Bohemia Interactive, moved tactics into open terrain where a lone soldier stayed fragile.

8- and 16-bit (1986–1994)
88 games in the catalogThe mouse and the floppy disk changed strategy more than any faster processor. On the Amiga, Atari ST and PC, players stopped typing commands and began pointing straight at the map. Populous (1989) created the god game, where you shape terrain and guide followers instead of ordering units. Civilization (1991) folded exploration, science and diplomacy into a single campaign. Dune II (1992) combined gathering resources, building a base and fighting in real time into a pattern the next decade kept repeating. Hex-based turn games such as Battle Isle carried on beside it.

A sprawling space RPG blending exploration, diplomacy, and arcade-style ship combat.
SNES Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Starship Bridge Simulator
An unusual starship command simulator; instead of jumping, you sit in the captain's chair.
The beginnings (until 1985)
27 games in the catalogBefore 1985, strategy games ran on machines with a few dozen kilobytes of memory, so they stuck to turns and the hex maps borrowed from tabletop wargames. Publishers such as SSI and MicroProse made digital wargames where the computer handled the combat tables for you. A few games broke the mold: M.U.L.E. (1983) turned economics into a four-player game, and The Lords of Midnight (1984) let you command armies across a vast landscape seen from a first-person view. Strategy then meant mostly tables, a map and patience.

A reconstruction of the Falklands War just two years after the conflict; command either Britain or Argentina.
