It grew out of a training simulator for the US Army; you command infantry squads, not individual soldiers.

Full Spectrum Warrior is a 2004 tactical war game developed by studio Pandemic Studios, based on a simulation tool originally created to train American soldiers in cooperation with the US Army, which set the game apart from most action titles of its era. Rather than directly controlling a single soldier, the player commands two four-man infantry squads, issuing orders to move, take cover, flank the enemy, and coordinate an attack, all while constantly having to mind covered positions, firing angles, and the safe movement of men through the streets of a fictional Middle Eastern city.

The basis of every engagement was a simple but unforgiving logic: one squad pins the enemy down with suppressing fire while, under its cover, the other flanks around and delivers the decisive blow. Soldiers moved on their own from one piece of cover to the next along a drawn path, but the player still had to judge whether that route didn't cross open ground. A wounded soldier didn't regenerate and had to be carried to safety, adding an immediate and palpable cost to every mistake. This emphasis on tactics and real military procedure rather than arcade-style shooting created a thoroughly distinctive take on the war-game genre.

Critics highly praised the authenticity and tension the game managed to create through careful command rather than direct firing, even if some players missed the greater action-oriented pace typical of rival titles like Call of Duty. Full Spectrum Warrior became one of the titles that demonstrated the diversity of genres available on Xbox, and its military origins and realistic approach to squad command still make it a unique entry in the history of console war games. Its tie to a real army training program lent the game unusual credibility and set it apart from most fictional war shooters of the time.
