WHAT TO PLAY
RPGs
952 games in the catalog
The RPG began as an attempt to move tabletop role-playing, above all Dungeons & Dragons from 1974, onto a computer. The player leads a character or a party that grows: it earns experience, improves its stats, finds better gear, and the stronger it gets, the further it can go. The computer took over the job of the referee who rolls the dice and keeps track of the rules, so you could play without a group.
From the start the genre has rested on two promises. The first is progress you can see, both in the numbers and on screen. The second is a world where your choices matter: who joins the party, whom you trust, which road you take. Depending on which promise got more weight, the Western and Japanese branches drifted apart, along with loot-driven action games and today's hybrids that borrow only part of the formula.
It lasted because it fits on any hardware and combines with almost anything. A text dungeon, a turn-based battle, an open world and a card game share the same skeleton: a character that changes and a world that reacts to it. That is why RPG mechanics now show up in nearly every large game.
Today (2015 onwards)
247 games in the catalogToday's RPGs rarely fit in a single box. Elden Ring (2022) joined an open world to FromSoftware's demanding combat, Hades (2020) told its story through repeated deaths in a roguelike dungeon, and Slay the Spire (2019) turned a card game into character progression. On phones the free-to-play model took hold, with characters obtained by random draws, as in Wuthering Waves (2024). Remasters such as Diablo II: Resurrected (2021) show that older designs can return without losing their point.

The HD generation (2005–2014)
260 games in the catalogHD consoles allowed more cinematic storytelling and larger worlds. BioWare's Mass Effect (2007) combined cover shooting with a dialogue wheel and choices that carried over between games. Guild Wars (2005) offered online play without a monthly subscription. Persona 4 (2008) alternated school days with dungeon crawling. At the same time small developers came back on PC: Legend of Grimrock (2012) revived grid-based dungeons and Rogue Legacy (2013) showed the roguelite, where part of your progress survives death. Digital distribution and crowdfunding made such comebacks possible.

The arrival of 3D (1995–2004)
259 games in the catalogCD-ROMs and 3D graphics changed both the scale of games and the way they told stories. Diablo (1996) cut the controls down to mouse clicks in randomly generated dungeons and ran on the hunt for better gear, which grew into the loot-driven action RPG. Fallout (1997) and Planescape: Torment (1999) went the opposite way in an isometric view, built on dialogue, skills and the consequences of decisions, with the option to fight very little. Gothic (2001) set a hand-built 3D world that could be crossed without loading screens. As the internet spread, online worlds arrived, such as RuneScape (2001), playable straight in a browser.

8- and 16-bit (1986–1994)
146 games in the catalogConsoles forced the genre to simplify: a whole RPG had to be run from a gamepad and a few menus. Dragon Quest (1986) settled that form and started the Japanese RPG, with a fixed story, turn-based battles and travel across a map. On computers things went another way: Dungeon Master (1987) turned dungeon crawling into a real-time game controlled with a mouse. Final Fantasy IV (1991) brought battles in which characters take turns as a timer fills, and Secret of Mana (1993) real-time combat that up to three players could join. The action branch grew stronger, and the Japanese and Western schools drew apart.

The beginnings (until 1985)
15 games in the catalogThe first computer RPGs grew up on university mainframes and home 8-bit machines, where memory was the scarcest resource. A game had to get by with text, crude graphics and turn-based combat. Wizardry (1981) gave players a party of six in a wireframe first-person dungeon, Ultima an open world seen from above, and Rogue randomly generated levels with permanent death, the root of every roguelike. Ultima IV (1985) built its design around the player's virtues rather than only around killing monsters. Dungeons were drawn on a square grid and every step was counted.
