Silent Hill f
Silent Hill f takes Konami's legendary horror franchise outside the American small town that made the series famous for the first time, setting the story in rural Japan in the 1960s. The protagonist is a high school girl whose hometown transforms one foggy night into a dark, flower-overgrown version of itself, filled with disfigured beings. Choosing historical Japan over contemporary America gives the horror a different rhythm - alongside the series' traditional motifs of fog, garbled radio, and psychological dread, it adds period cultural pressures, family relationships, and a visual language drawing on Japanese grotesquerie and the symbolism of flowers as both decay and beauty at once.
Gameplay-wise, this is a classic survival horror with an emphasis on exploration, item collection, and puzzle-solving, but combat takes place exclusively in melee - the protagonist has no firearms on hand, only improvised tools, dodges, and timed blocks. The lack of ammunition is thus replaced by the risk of close-quarters skirmishes and the need to carefully consider when to even engage in a fight at all. The environment is deliberately claustrophobic and visually dense, with fog and overgrown vegetation replacing the cold steel of previous entries, and the atmosphere relies mainly on silence broken by fragments of sound.
The game was developed by studio NeoBards Entertainment, but the script was written by Ryukishi07, author of the visual novel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which explains the emphasis on gradually revealed trauma and the protagonist's unreliable narration. Silent Hill f arrives at a time when the franchise, after years of spin-offs and the remake of the second game, is returning to its original games, and it is the first entry in the main series not set in the titular town of Silent Hill itself - a gamble that divides fans between those who appreciate the refresh and those who miss the familiar streets and old fog.
Why play it: It will appeal to fans of psychological horror and Japanese grotesquerie who appreciate a new cultural context and a combat system without firearms, rather than those expecting the classic streets of Silent Hill.
