A horror rail shooter, a port of the arcade machine with zombies on linear paths.

The House of the Dead III is a horror rail shooter from 2002, created for Xbox by studio Wow Entertainment under the Sega banner as a port of the beloved arcade cabinet. The player moves along linear, predetermined paths through a dark mansion full of genetically mutated zombies and monsters, with the sole task of eliminating waves of enemies attacking from all sides of the screen as quickly and accurately as possible, while the character advances forward automatically without direct control over movement.

Unlike previous entries, the primary weapon became a shotgun, whose spread and need for reloading gave the gameplay a different rhythm than the rapid-fire pistol; every shot had to be considered more carefully while keeping distance from the nearest threat. The path also branched at key moments depending on whether the player managed to save a partner attacked by a monster, so different playthroughs led through different parts of the complex. Bosses had marked weak points and short windows during which they could be effectively hit. The Xbox version had to cope with the fact that, unlike the arcade original, it lacked a dedicated light gun, and so it offered analog-stick controls with a crosshair reticle, which slightly altered the character of play but preserved the tense atmosphere and cinematic camera direction.

The graphical presentation was very impressive for its time, with bloody, graphically raw scenes of monster elimination that earned the game a higher age rating for adult players. Critics praised the faithful port of the arcade experience to a home console and the solid graphics, though they noted the limited replayability typical of the entire rail shooter genre. The House of the Dead III thus expanded the beloved horror arcade series beyond the arcade cabinets and cemented its reputation among fans of fast, straightforward action with a B-movie horror flair.
