Another entry in the undead lightgun series; the same pace, jump scares, and endless waves of monsters.

The House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn is one of the newest arcade entries in the long-running rail shooter series and brings the classic light gun concept into a more modern technical form, including optional support for virtual reality for an even greater sense of immersion in the horror setting. As in previous entries, the player moves automatically along a predetermined path, aims at approaching zombies and other monsters, and tries to survive waves of enemies as well as demanding boss battles, while the game continues the series' long-running story revolving around a mysterious organization and its experiments, which led to the emergence of another wave of infected creatures.

The graphics use modern arcade hardware, thanks to which environments, enemy models, and lighting effects look significantly more detailed than in older entries of the series, and the virtual reality variant offers players the chance to experience the game from a perspective that classic arcade machines could not previously offer. The core gameplay nevertheless remains faithful to the series' tradition – quick aiming, reacting to suddenly appearing enemies, and bonuses for precise hits on vulnerable spots, which is especially appreciated by long-time fans of the brand accustomed to the fast pace of previous entries. Cooperation between multiple players at a single machine remains an important part of the experience, similar to older arcade entries in the series, and contributes to the lively atmosphere around arcade halls.

Scarlet Dawn shows that even an established arcade genre like rail shooters can benefit from modern technologies such as virtual reality without abandoning the basic principles the series was built on back in the nineties. For House of the Dead fans, it is a welcome continuation that combines the nostalgic feel of a classic arcade shooter with current technical execution and new possibilities for immersing oneself in the series' horror atmosphere. The choice between classic on-screen display and full virtual immersion also gives players the option to choose their experience according to their own preferences and experience with VR technology.
