A launch action game that first brought the Onimusha series from the PlayStation 2 to the Xbox.

Genma Onimusha is a 2002 action game that Japanese studio Capcom created as a launch title for Xbox in Japan, bringing its successful Onimusha series to Microsoft's console after it had until then been tied exclusively to the rival PlayStation 2. Playing as the samurai Samanosuke Akechi, the player sets out into a feudal Japan plagued by an invasion of demonic beings called Genma, fighting with a sword, seizing demonic weapons from fallen enemies, and solving simple puzzles in the spirit of the classic survival-horror games that Onimusha's design draws so closely on.

Gameplay relied on fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds through which the character moved, while combat demanded reading enemy attacks, blocking, and a precisely timed counterstrike capable of felling an opponent in a single blow. The souls of defeated demons were absorbed with a special gauntlet and served as material for upgrading weapons and health, keeping the player constantly motivated to clear the battlefield down to the last flicker. Genma Onimusha was in fact an enhanced version of the original series' first entry, reworked with improved graphics that took advantage of the Xbox's greater power, along with added cutscenes, new enemies, and small gameplay tweaks, making it the definitive version of the opening chapter rather than an entirely new title.

Critics praised the atmospheric presentation, the cinematic camera, and the tension typical of the series, with the graphical overhaul in particular singled out in reviews as proof of the new Microsoft console's technical muscle. Genma Onimusha was an important signal that even Japanese series traditionally tied to PlayStation were willing to find their way onto Xbox, and for many players it became their first encounter with Capcom's world of samurai and demons. The improved lighting and textures served as a showcase of just how big a leap the Xbox generation offered over its predecessor.
