An alternate history of a Soviet occupation of the USA; a plumber becomes the leader of the New York resistance.

Freedom Fighters is a 2003 action game from Danish studio IO Interactive, otherwise renowned for the Hitman series, offering an original alternate history in which the Soviet Union, rather than the United States, developed the atomic bomb first and subsequently occupied New York. Playing as ordinary plumber Christopher Stone, the player gradually becomes the leader of a resistance movement trying to push the Soviet occupiers out of the streets of the American metropolis, with a charisma system forming a key game mechanic - the more successful the player's actions, the more civilians join the resistance and follow them as companions into further missions.

This real-time recruiting and commanding of a group of insurgents, to whom the player can issue simple orders to attack, take cover, or hold a position, gave what would otherwise be a classic third-person shooter unexpected tactical depth and a real sense of building an actual resistance movement. Different parts of the city were further connected through the sewers, and missions influenced one another - blowing up a supply depot weakened the garrison of a neighboring area, so progress wasn't strictly linear and the player could choose which position to break first. Snow-covered streets, posters of occupation propaganda, and a mighty orchestral soundtrack meanwhile created a surprisingly evocative atmosphere.

Critics received the game very positively, praising in particular its inventive story, the atmospheric depiction of an occupied New York, and the system for commanding the resistance, which earned Freedom Fighters a reputation as one of the generation's best-reviewed yet commercially underperforming titles. Although the announced sequel never reached the final stage of development, Freedom Fighters is still remembered today as an underrated gem in IO Interactive's rich body of work and one of the most distinctive shooters of its generation.
