A sequel to the popular rally title from DICE, with new disciplines and better tracks.

RalliSport Challenge 2 is a racing game from 2004, created for Xbox by the Swedish studio Digital Illusions CE, better known as DICE, long before it became famous for the Battlefield series. The sequel to the beloved rally title expanded its lineup of disciplines with rallycross, off-road, and rally raid races, brought more richly detailed tracks inspired by real-world locations around the globe, and improved an already highly regarded vehicle physics model across different surfaces, from mud through snow to asphalt.

The driving model sat somewhere between simulation and accessible arcade: cars genuinely needed to be steered into corners through braking and throttle work, the handbrake and drift were essential on gravel, and the difference between all-wheel drive and a weaker single-axle-drive car was immediately noticeable. The game placed great emphasis on an authentic sense of driving, destructible environments around the tracks, and dynamic weather conditions that affected tire grip and visibility in real time, a still fairly rare technical feature in 2004. Gradually worn ruts and scattered gravel also changed the ideal racing line over the course of individual laps.

Critics particularly praised the balanced difficulty, the wide range of licensed cars and tracks, and solid multiplayer support over Xbox Live, which placed RalliSport Challenge 2 among the best-reviewed racing titles of the generation alongside Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport. Although the series ended after this installment, as DICE turned its full attention to developing Battlefield, RalliSport Challenge 2 remains remembered today as one of the most technically accomplished rally simulators of its time and proof of the Swedish studio's versatility before its encounter with the modern-warfare series. The detailed destruction and terrain-behavior model was, in 2004, among the very best the genre of console rally games had to offer.
