A console port of the legendary multiplayer game, reworked from keyboard controls to a gamepad.

Counter-Strike for Xbox from 2003 is a console port of the legendary multiplayer phenomenon that originated as a mod for Half-Life and became famous on computers around the world. The console conversion was handled by Gearbox Software, which had to completely rework the keyboard-and-mouse-focused controls into a form suitable for a gamepad, while preserving the game's core: tactical combat between terrorists and a counter-terrorist unit, a weapon purchasing system between rounds, and an emphasis on teamwork and accurate shooting.

The round structure, in which a killed player must wait for the start of the next clash, remained untouched, and so did the economy, in which money earned from wins and kills is turned into better gear. Alongside the classic maps, the lineup also included versions adapted for console gameplay, and the game offered aim assistance so that accuracy wasn't unconditionally on the side of mouse players. The Xbox version also included bonus content in the form of Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes, a single-player campaign with missions against computer-controlled bots, giving players without access to online multiplayer at least a partial taste of the game.

It was precisely Xbox Live support that let players experience legendary tactical firefights in the console's online environment, which was still a relatively new concept in 2003, and Counter-Strike thus became one of the flagship multiplayer titles of the early Xbox Live era alongside Halo 2. Although the console version never reached the same popularity as the original PC game, it remains an important reminder of just how strongly the Counter-Strike brand could resonate even outside its home platform. For many console players, it was the very first encounter with the tactical team-based concept that had been shaping the whole genre of online shooters on computers for years.
