A sequel after sixteen years of waiting that feels like it arrived after just one.

Psychonauts 2 is a sequel that was sixteen years in the making, yet feels as if only a single year had passed between the two entries. Raz has just been accepted among the Psychonauts and, instead of heroic missions, faces an internship, paperwork, and his colleagues' distrust — and above all, a series of expeditions into other people's minds. That's the heart of the game: each mind is a self-contained world with its own visual concept, from a hospital scene turned into a concert stage to a cooking competition where the ingredients are thoughts. In between, Raz uses telekinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation on a ball, or mental links, combining individual abilities both in combat and while jumping and solving small puzzles.

On Xbox Series X|S the game runs smoothly at high resolution, and fast loading helps the pacing, since transitions between minds happen often. The visuals rely on a bold cartoonish style that changes with each level depending on what the given character is suffering from, so the game never visually repeats itself. The music draws on jazz, orchestral scoring, and psychedelia, precisely mirroring the madness of each mind. Character animation and facial expressions rank among the best the genre has to offer, and together with witty dialogue they form the main draw.

Reviews were unequivocally enthusiastic, praising not just the humor and inventiveness but especially the way the game talks about anxiety, trauma, and addiction — with empathy, without oversimplification, and without turning mental struggles into entertainment at someone else's expense. That's exactly where Psychonauts 2 remains influential: it showed that a colorful platformer can carry a serious subject without losing its lightness. Today it's one of the most welcoming games in Xbox's library and a great entry point for anyone who thinks platformers no longer have anything to say. Its accessibility helps too: combat difficulty can be lowered at any time, so anyone mainly interested in the story doesn't need to fear being stopped by a single tough spot. Those who like collecting, on the other hand, will find plenty of hidden details in every mind.
